Mrs. Peterson was born Azilee (affectionately called “Lee”) Cathcart on October 10, 1944, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, to the marital union of Mr. Booker T. and Mrs. Rebecca Smith Cathcart. She was the second eldest of nine children and the first daughter of two girls. Her mother, father, and two brothers (Leonard and James Robert Cathcart) all preceded her in death.
After a move to Chesapeake, Virginia, she met and married her current husband, Vernon Boston “Pete” Peterson, who was her devoted husband for 40 years. Previous marriage was to Raymond Simmons.
Lee had a passion for cooking, laughing, bowling, and enjoying life with her family and friends. She had a very contiguous smile, and it was always present. Lee graduated from Emmett Scott High School, Rock Hill, South Carolina. She was a member of the Girls’ Glee Club, Homemakers of America Club, and Emmett Scott High School Drama Club.
On Saturday, December 9, 2023, Lee departed this life quietly at home with her beloved husband Pete, by her side.
