Artis C. Washington was born on February 23, 1948, in Fort Myers, Florida. He was the eldest of ten siblings born to late H. Willis and Gertrude Washington Reddick of Greenville, Florida.
Artis (eight years old of age) and his sister, Mary L. Washington McCoy (five years of age), moved to Washington, DC, in July 1956, where they were adopted and raised by their mother’s eldest brother and his wife, the late Thomas J. and the late Louise C. Washington.
Artis attended Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Capitol Hill, at an early age. He was educated in the District of Columbia school system, graduating from Eastern Senior High School in June 1966. Artis was an “A” student who enjoyed school, especially Wood Shop and playing basketball. In his pastime, you could find him “shooting hoops” on the playground in the neighborhood.
From his first marriage to the former Sharon Wooten, Artis produced three daughters and one son.
Artis was the first of his siblings to enlist in the military. At age 22, on June 20, 1970, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was decorated with many awards, and his highest award was the Meritorious Service Medal. He served for twenty-two and one-half years, retiring in October 1992 as a Master Gunnery Sargeant.
In November 1986, Artis married his second wife, Nilsa Estrada. Together, they had two daughters.
Artis is survived by his wife of 38 years, Nilsa Washington; his mother, Gertrude; six children: Joanne, Giovonnia, Barry, Dee-Dee, Angela and Nicole; two grandchildren: Qitorah, Keith, Aaliyah, Alonso, NaiQuan, Dante, Jr., Reece, Kamarri, Kamil, Jr., and Zayn; nine siblings; Mary, Vernon (Henrietta), Edwina, Wendell (Dianne), Willism Jr., Robin (Richard), Reginald, Kathyrn (Tony), and Karen; and a host of other relatives and friends.
