Mrs. Arletha Leake Speight, daughter of the late Octavious and the late Ora Leake in Montgomery County, North Carolina was born July 13, 1927. She attended the public school system in Wilson, NC. She had five siblings, sister Ruth McLaughlin of Washington, DC, sister, Pearlina Deshazo of Washington, DC, Brother, Daniel Leake (deceased), brother, James Leake (deceased and brother George Leake of Washington, DC. She was married to the late Deacon Joseph C. Speight and they were blessed with twelve children.
They lived in Wilson, NC until 1955 when they moved to Norfolk, VA. She worked for the late Dr. John R Kight and his wife Nancy Kight for many years. She helped them raise their two children, John Jr and their daughter Nancy. She was a loyal member of the New Rising Sun Baptist Church in the City of Norfolk under the leadership of Pastor Edward Barringer. Due to her love for Christ and her church she participated in different ministries including the Missionary Ministry, The Gospel Choir and the Pastor’s Aid Ministry.
She leaves to cherish her memories, elven children, James A. Speight, Sr.( Landover, MD, Joseph E Speight, Sr.(Sandra) of VA, Johnnie R. Speight, Sr of Virginia Beach, Ora M. Smith (Charles) of Norfolk, Helen Matthews (Mark),Virginia Beach, Charles Speight (Patricia), Norfolk, Jeanette Sabo (Mike), Mechanicsville, MD, her beloved daughter Vernette Heckstall (Carl) preceded her in death, Ronald Speight (Virgie) Suffolk, VA, Donald Speight (Bobbie) Virginia Beach, Michael Speight, Portsmouth, VA, Michelle Williams (Daniel) Virginia Beach; thirty grandchildren, thirty nine great grands and a host of nieces and nephews.
