Ardeliou McCoy Godfrey

“Deliou”

Ardeliou McCoy Godfrey was born on June 21, 1927 to Linwood and Joanna McCoy. She was the seventh child of 12 children. She is survived by one brother, Clifton (Lillie) McCoy. She was preceded in death by Vera, Leonard, Wilton, Ruffin, Igenter, Maynoch, Frank, Katherine, Frances and Charlie. Ardeliou peacefully transitioned into the hands of our Heavenly Father on June 18, 2019 with her loving and devoted son, George Malcom and grandson, George Malcom, Jr. at her side.

Ardeliou received her formal education in the Princess Anne County School System. She was baptized at New Life Gospel Church, and faithfully served as the Secretary of Sunday School and attended the weekly Baptist Union Training.

Ardeliou met the love of her life: Willie Nathaniel “Nat” Godfrey in 1948. They were united in Holy Matrimony on August 21, 1949. Five children were born to this union: Hileria Tamarr, Wanda Ardeliou, Deborah Carol, Willie Jr. and George Malcolm. She enjoyed taking care of her two grandsons, George, Jr. and Deonte. Nat preceded her in death on January 9, 2011.

Ardeliou was creative with her hands and mind. She was master baker, seamstress, and floral designer. She was the Diva of all divas. She dressed from head to toe accessorizing her outfits with her gloves, purse, and hat. She designed and created most of her outfits without a pattern; dressing her girls in adorable matching mother and daughter outfits. Mom and her girls were always beautifully dressed! Her home was adorned with all her gifts and decorated exquisitely with floral arrangements inside and outside. She loved creating floral arrangements for the church, her family and others. Ardeliou was the ultimate interior designer. She was a great cook and baker, from hot buttery rolls to the sweet potato jacks, and her savory cabbage.

Ardeliou became a member of St. Luke A.M.E. Church in Chesapeake, VA. She served as Beautification President, Missionary President, and Church Treasurer. She worked for the City of Chesapeake for 45 years as an Election Clerk; and later with Smith and Welton as a clerk and foundations specialist. Ardeliou was a member of the Eastern Star of Virginia for more than 50 years and was a three time Past Matron; she was also affiliated with100 Ladies in White. Ardeliou received numerous awards and certificates. Mayor Alan Krasnoff and the Chesapeake City Council presented her with a Certificate of Recognition for Service and the Coretta Scott King Award of Excellence in May 2005.

Ardeliou leaves to cherish her memory: children: Hileria Godfrey, Wanda Godfrey, Deborah (David) Bonds, Willie N. (Kathie) Godfrey and George M. (Debra) Godfrey; special god-sisters: Sylvia Downey and Pam Sivels Godfrey; grandchildren: Kasimu Godfrey, Jason, Phillip, and Nicholas Godfrey, George Malcom Godfrey, Jr., Brandelyn Kemp, Mariyah Simpson, Deonte Godfrey, Crystal and Kion Evans; great-grandchildren: Miles, Peyton, Makiyah, Rowen, Aubrielle; and great-great granddaughter: Merci; sister and brother in-laws: Madora Brown, Josephus (Lorraine) Godfrey, and Mattie (William) Walston, Undelus McCoy, Undine McCoy and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Ardeliou was loved and adored and will be missed by us all.
