Anton Christy Ashburn, Sr., a providing and nurturing husband, father, brother and friend to many, was born October 2, 1955 to the late Ruth Adlena Ashburne at Norfolk Community Hospital. Then fondly reared by the late Wayman & Phillis Ashburne during the Civil Rights Era.
Anton also known as Tony, attended Woodrow Wilson High School, but chose to finish his studies in the United States Army, which was during the Vietnam Era. Tony was always assiduous in the pursuit of learning new and interesting facts where he continued his studies at Tidewater Community college.
In 1988, he married his endearing and loving wife LaVelda, that he shared 34 years and 11 months. 1989, He chose to surrender the “old man” and experienced a personal walk with Christ. Out of this union, 5 years later (through prayer) he was blessed with a named sake that was a true gift from God.
Tony exhibited strong work ethic’s and accountability in every job he possessed. There were many jobs performed, however his last position he held for over 25 years of dedicated service to the Department of Defense, Norfolk Naval Shipyard (Shop 11, 325) where he served diligently as a Journeyman Ship-fitter Supervisor.
Tony was a “man’s man”, a “peoples person”. A puissant competitor. He was family oriented. He loved to explore scenic and educational locations. A sports enthusiast, a major supporter of the Washington Commanders, a fisher of “fish and man”, Pool-shark, Chess-master, Bid Whist, Texas Holding and numerous other table games.
Left to cherish his memory is his lovely wife LaVelda Blackwell-Ashburn, son Anton C. Ashburn, II. Three brothers, Dwight M. Ashburne (Melinda), Charles E. McCrae (Andrea), Wayman P. Ashburne (Patrice). Two Sisters, Sonita L. Surratt, Marion A. Bennett (Michael); Two Godchildren, Andrew L. Blackwell, Kaleya Banks. Two Aunts, Marlene Smith, Carlesta Ashburne King, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
