Alvin Joseph Sylvester Sr., a beloved God-fearing husband, father, brother, and grandfather, went to be with his Lord after a battle with cancer on November 20th, 2024, at the age of 79. He was born on July 19th, 1945, in Elizabeth City, Camden County, North Carolina, to the late Wiley and Delilan Sylvester, and he had two brothers. Alvin worshipped at Faith Community Church after being invited by his grandson, Key, in 2010. He served as President of Hampton Blinded Veterans Group for six years.
Alvin attended Elizabeth City State University, where he met his beautiful bride, Carolyn Moyer. He enlisted in the Army and left college to serve his country, fighting in the Vietnam War. Upon returning, he married Carolyn in 1968, and they moved to Norfolk, Virginia. He finished his bachelor’s degree at Old Dominion University and went on to receive his Master of Science degree in clinical therapy from Boston University. He received an Honored Circle Award from the Hampton Blinded Veterans Group, the Reuben Margolin Award from the Massachusetts Chapter, and the Graduate Achievement Award from Greater Pittsburgh, Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, Guild for the Blind. Alvin led as a senior counselor in the City of Portsmouth Department of Behavioral Healthcare Services before retiring. Alvin had a great affinity for jazz music and had a rich collection of legendary musicians and historic greats. His opulent audio system on his third floor, a.k.a. the “guy room,” boasted award-winning sounds and created the atmosphere of a live jazz session.
Alvin leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Carolyn Sylvester; son, Alvin J. Sylvester Jr.; daughters, Kenya (Larry) White and Kelli Sylvester; granddaughter and grandsons, Star, Key, and Amir White, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was a man dedicated to his family, and he took great honor and pride in their accomplishments. Alvin was deeply loved by those who knew him, and he will be sorely missed.
