Alvin Felix Turner

Sunrise: June 20, 1952

Sunset: March 11, 2024

Alvin Felix Turner, born June 20, 1952, in Portsmouth, Virginia was the youngest of five children born to Herbert and Zena Turner. Alvin’s family roots originated in Southampton County, VA, and he was a direct descendant of the legendary Rev. Nat Turner, who led the historical Southampton Insurrection in 1831.

Alvin was predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Zena Turner; his brothers, Herbert Jr. and Franklin Turner; and sisters Eleanor Turner Boyce and Francis Turner Cornelius.

Alvin was educated in the Portsmouth Public Schools system and was a graduate of Craddock High School. Upon high school graduation, Alvin proudly served his country as an Aircraft Mechanic during the Vietnam War in the United States Air Force. After his discharge from the military, he began his civilian career as an aircraft mechanic for over 35 years at Naval Station Norfolk and Oceana Naval Base.

“Bae” as he was so fondly called by his wife, Towanna, accepted Christ as his personal savior at an early age. He was a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church where he faithfully served as a member of the Men’s Usher Board and the Joint Usher Ministry. An accomplished bass player, Alvin also joined the music ministry and played for several choirs, including the Male Chorus and the Combined Choir.

To know Al was to know he had a deep passion for music, art, the game of chess and most importantly, the Dallas Cowboys. He could talk to you for hours over jazz music in his music room where his artwork is proudly displayed. His chess game was brilliant, and he was known to always ask “How bout them Cowboys!?”

Alvin leaves decades of memories to cherish with his loving Wife of 30 years, and best friend of 39 years, Towanna Turner; his namesake and devoted son, Alvin F. Turner II (Kenyata) of Portsmouth; his loving daughter, Fair M. Turner of Chesapeake; his step-son, Pharondus Clemon of Virginia Beach; his wonderful granddaughters, Eyonnie Cherry and Derica White of Portsmouth and grandson, Pharondus Clemon II; his faithful and supportive nephew, Kevin Jones (Atlanta, GA); his loving niece, Frances Darden (Troy) of Chesapeake, and his sweet God-daughter, Elayna Edwards of Suffolk. Also remembering Alvin are those who fondly knew him as Cousin, Friend, Truck Turner, Co-worker, Church Member or simply just as Al.

Worked in the same aircraft hangar as Al at NAS Oceana. A very fine gentleman with a great sense of humor. He seemed like he could be everyone’s favorite uncle. Sorry for your loss.
