Alva Jessie Small Vincent

Sunrise: July 24, 1928

Sunset: January 19, 2023

Alva Jessie Small Vincent, daughter of Emma Jessie Small Skinner and James Small, deceased, peacefully went to sleep at home surrounded by loved ones.  Alva was born July 24, 1928 in New York but raised in Norfolk, Virginia with the help of her loving Aunt Bill and her beloved grandmother, Jessie Small.  Alva was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk.  She attended Elizabeth City Teachers College in Elizabeth City, North Carolina for two years and finished her college education at CCB in Baltimore, Maryland.

Alva married Raymond Leon Vincent, Sr on July 29, 1950.  From that union six children were born: Jessie Harrison, Raymond Leon Vincent, Jr, Hortense Johnson (husband Walter Johnson deceased), Wallace Vincent (Joyce), Myra Vincent, Calvin Vincent, and Deborah Hawkins (bonus daughter).

Alva was known to her great-grandchildren as Nana.  Her memories will be cherished by her loving 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, sister in law Millie Vincent Salter, Elizabeth Vincent, and a multitude of treasured family and friends who were extended children to her.  They all loved her pineapple cakes, macaroni & cheese, and her famous hot rolls.  Everyone knew her motto “Stand Tall.”  While in Maryland she attended Homestead Methodist Church.  When she moved back to her hometown of Norfolk, Virginia she attended her childhood church, St. Paul CME Church until her passing.
