Alphonso Clifton, affectionately known as “Hawk,” was born on February 15, 1944, in Portsmouth, Virginia, where he also spent his final days. He passed away on November 16, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love and music.
Alphonso had a deep passion for playing and teaching the guitar, often sharing his love for music with those around him. Inspired by his favorite band, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, he created his own singing group known as The Mighty Spiritual Wonders in the early 1970s. He truly loved and cherished the joy that music brought into his life. An avid sports enthusiast, he particularly loved Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens.
He is survived by his three children: Ramonsa Tweedy May (Timothy May Sr.), Keith Kee-Jo Clifton, and Yolanda Yo-Yo Mebane. Alphonso was a proud grandfather to ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Samuel Cecil Clifton, a special friend, Rosemary Brown, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Known for his down-to-earth nature, Alphonso required little to be happy; if he had his guitar in hand and a sports game on, he was content. He touched the lives of many and was beloved by those who knew him. His kind spirit and passion for life will be dearly missed.
