Alfred Lee Howard was born September 16, 1932 in Portsmouth, VA. He was the middle child of 3 boys born to Laura and Charles Howard. Alfred was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday October 17, 2021. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Ada L. Howard, both parents and both of his brothers Charles and Berlin.
Alfred enlisted into the United States Navy on September 16, 1953 and served his country until he retired/honorably discharged on October 3, 1972. After retiring, he went on to become a shipping and receiving manager for Sears and Roebuck. He also went on to work for the Coast Guard base with the security office.
While in the Navy, Alfred was stationed in Puerto Rico for a period of time where he met the love of his life, Ada Wilda Lozada Acevedo. Alfred and Ada entered marital bliss on September 3, 1955. After getting married, Alfred brought Ada back to Portsmouth, VA where they started and raised their family. Known as “Mr. Howard” in the Prentis Park neighborhood, he was famously known for always maintaining his yard and the beautiful rose bushes he planted for his wife with his white safari hat on and tobacco pipe hanging from his lips. He loved his daily shopping trips to the Commissary, sitting inside of his screened in porch watching what was going on in the neighborhood and preparing the most delicious meals for his family. Alfred had the sharpest wit and a unique sense of humor even in his final moments of life.
Alfred was the loving husband to Ada for over 65 years. He was a phenomenal father to 3 daughters, Vivian “Ronnie” Clark (Tony), Pamela “Lynn” Howard and Dr. Lisa Goodwin and 1 son, Alfred Howard Jr (Tonya). Alfred was a doting grandfather to 3 grandchildren, Lauren Goodwin, Landon Clark (Kiara) and Tianna Clark. He also has 3 adoring great grandchildren, Lyisia Smith, Leilani Pulley and Aria Clark.
He leaves behind to cherish his memories his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren as well as a host of extended family.
