Albert Lee Benson, Sr.

Sunrise: January 1, 1943

Sunset: July 1, 2024

Albert Lee Benson Sr., fondly known as “Doc,” of Portsmouth VA passed away on July 1, 2024, at the age of 81. He was born January 1, 1943, in Chesapeake, VA (Queen City) to the late Leander Benson Sr. and Lenora Barrington.

Albert was a proud graduate of Crestwood High School (The Mighty Bombers !!!),  class of 1963. He sang in the school choir and the Tri-City male chorus. This is where he met the love of his life, Barbara Peoples. After high school, Albert served honorably in the U.S. Army and later worked at several Tidewater shipyards, while continuing his education at Norfolk State College and Old Dominion College. His career as a Civil Servant culminated with his retirement as a Nuclear Inspector from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Not one to remain idle, he would go on to work part-time at a local 7-Eleven convenience store, over the next several years. He was also a long-time member of Mt Sinai Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, VA.

Albert demonstrated tremendous self-confidence in everything he did. He found joy in music and was a talented deejay for many years at the renowned Lion Tamers Club. With a delightful sense of humor and a love of dancing, Albert brought joy and laughter to many. “Doc” was known for his signature style and took pride in his collection of suits. He had a simple and straightforward approach to life, which was best exemplified by his favorite motto “I don’t need much, just a peace of mind.”

His proudest accomplishment was his loving family, including his devoted wife of 60 years, Barbara Peoples. Together they raised three children: Kimberley Benson Mitchell, retired Army Colonel Albert Benson, Jr (Tanya), and Tara Benson.

Albert’s legacy lives on through his cherished grandchildren, Dominique Mitchell, Michael Benson, Ashleigh Lucce (Daniel), Alecia Benson, U.S. Army 1LT Tiara Benson, Brandon Albert Benson, and bonus nephew, Earl Wilson. He was overjoyed by the arrival of his great-grandchildren, Triston, and Melanie. Nothing brought him more joy than spending time with them.

Albert was preceded in death by his daughter, Kimberley Ann Benson Mitchell; his siblings, Edith, Lenora, Leander Jr, Annie, Rosetta, Audrey, Earl, Evelyn, and Ola.

Albert is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Especially his bonus sister from another mother and family friend, Ms. Townes, through his time at 7-Eleven.

Albert will be dearly missed, but his memory will live on forever in the hearts of those that knew and loved him.

“How bout them Cowboys!”
