Agnes J. Miller

Sunrise: February 18, 1939

Sunset: March 29, 2025

Death is the golden key that opens the place of eternity; thus, Sis. Agnes Jean Miller entered the place of eternity on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Waterside Health and Rehab Center of Norfolk, VA. She was born in Detroit, MI, on February 18, 1939, to parents of the late Herschell Sigsby Frierson and Volena Davis Frierson. She was a graduate of Central High School in Detroit, MI. She was one of nine siblings. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Mr. James A. Miller, Sr. (Ray), as well as her brothers, John Quincy Frierson, Hayward Frierson, Norman Frierson, and sister, Sylvia Volena Williams, Mildred Lorraine Tillage, Louise Morgan, and Myrtlee Frazier. Agnes accepted Christ at an early age and held fast to her Christian Faith throughout her life. In her lifetime, she had many church homes where she actively served, Temple of Prayer and New Generation Worship Center, both of Norfolk, VA. She loved worship and served in many roles, which included the treasurer, a deaconess, also as an usher. But her favorite position she loved was being the mother of the church, gently planting words of wisdom and seeds of faith into the hearts of the young.

A woman of many talents, Agnes was no stranger to hard work. She was a bus driver for Norfolk Public Schools for 40 years, where she moved up to Supervisor before she retired.

Later on, she drove for ARA and also Laidlaw Transportation until her health no longer allowed her to drive. But that didn’t keep her down. She loved to travel, whether by plane, car, or cruise ship; she was an adventurous woman at heart. During her spare time, she took up crafts, making floral arrangements and table decorations for family and friends for different events. She was also a member of the “Travelers Voice,” a group that sang locally for church events. As a result of her contributions to her church, family, community and friends may she continue to live in the lives of her survivors, which include her daughter Jeanette D. Parks (Joel) of Virginia Beach, VA, two sons, James A. Miller, Jr. of Norfolk, VA, and Daryl J. Miller (Sheryl) of Norfolk, VA. One brother, Chester Frierson of Detroit, MI, one god-daughter, Allena M. Johnson of Virginia Beach, VA, one god-son, Jermale Jenkins of Atlanta, GA. Closest and best friend: Linda M. Johnson of Virginia Beach, VA, and Gladys Speller Davison of Norfolk, VA, five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

Aunt Jean (what I call her) and I hit it off many years ago. Around 1972/73. We used to please cards, drink, and laugh, especially when Mable Lois was with us. My ex and I shared her and Ray’s anniversary on May 2nd, and we celebrated many times together. I later worked for her as a school bus driver prior to reentering the army. I loved being silly because I loved to hear her laugh (I will miss that). Thank you, Auntie, for your love, you shared your heart and guidance with a lot of people, and we are better off for you it. Rest well and we will meet again after the rapture. God bless your memory.
