Adell Hendrick Hawkins (affectionately known as “Tillie B” to family and friends) was born on September 14th, 1941, in Norfolk, VA, as the third of ten children from the union of Grace and Irvin Hendrick Sr. Adell departed this earthly life on July 1, 2025. She was educated in Norfolk Public Schools and is a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School class of 1960. She married Robert Hawkins, Sr., on February 10th, 1963. From this union, they have three children, Robert Hawkins, Jr., and a set of twin girls, Marlitia and Marissa Hawkins.
She has been a member of St. James A.M.E. Church with her mother, Grace Hendrick, since the age of 12 years old. Today, better known as New St. James A.M.E. Church. At New St. James A.M.E., she was a member of the Adult Choir, Stewardess Board, Lay Organization, and Missionary Society.
In the past, she worked as a Dietary Aide at King’s Daughters’ and a Custodian at Norfolk General Hospital. She worked as a Bus Driver and a Custodian with Norfolk Public Schools. She retired from Campostella Elementary School in 2006 after 25 years.
Adell leaves to cherish her memories and love, a son Robert Hawkins, Jr., and twin daughters, Marlitia and Marissa Hawkins of Norfolk, VA; two brothers, Irvin Hendrick, Jr., (Gloria), Norfolk, VA; and Charles Hendrick (Brenda), Chesapeake, VA; one sister, Marcell Baugh, Bowie, MD; additional siblings, Sharon Hendrick, Norfolk, VA, and Carnell Hendrick (Alveta), Chesapeake, VA., one uncle, Stevenson Hendrick of New Jersey; and three sisters-in-laws, Claudette Gaskins, Annette Short, and Constance Hawkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
