Our beloved Addie Lena Reese Powell was the 6th out of 9 children born to the late William and Betheye Reese on
February 13, 1927 in Capron, Virginia. Lena as she was affectionately called completed high school and then attended Norfolk State University. She married the late Thomas O. Powell, Sr. and together they raised seven children in a Christian home. Lena was a loving dutiful wife and a caring mother. She taught her children many things especially making sure that they all could sew and cook. In 1967, she began working outside the home with Portsmouth Public Schools in the cafeteria. In 1975, she decided to follow in her sister’s footsteps and begin working in the nursing field. Lena was employed as a private duty nurse, and then later worked as a Supervisor in Long Term Care. She retired from the industry in 1992.
She was a lifetime member of St. Luke Holiness Church. She vowed to her father that she would be there every 2nd Sunday even if she had to “just sit on the church steps”. She faithfully served as Church Mother, secretary and treasurer.
Lena thoroughly enjoyed cooking, sewing, crafting, gardening and being around family and friends. She wanted her home
to be thought of as the place to stop by for good food and warm conversation.
She was preceded in death by her daughters, Betheye E. P. Johnson and Maria Nadine Powell, one son, Thomas O.
Powell, Jr., and one grandson, Saul B. Johnson. She leaves to cherish her memory four children, Linwood J. Powell, Sr. (Faye), Natalie P. Cary, Geneva R. White and Carolyn J. Powell; fourteen grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; one sister, Elnora Mason (Carroll) one sister in law, Rosetta Evans fifteen nieces; fourteen nephews, and a host of cousins and friends.

November 2, 2018 at 6:36 pmI will forever remember the cookies and candies Sis. Powell made for me when Asha attended Howard University. I brought Asha home once, and for Christmas, her grandmother gave me the “sweetest” gifts ever. I am certain that she’s in the sweetest place, ever. Peace and abundant blessings to a family well-loved!!!
