Ada M. Purnell

Ada M. Purnell, 102, of the 1100 block of Rugby Street, Norfolk, VA, peacefully passed away early Friday, August 24, 2018 and transitioned to her heavenly home. She was born July 19, 1916 to the late Oscar and Sarah Moore in Fairmont, North Carolina Public School System and at an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal savoir and joined Philadelphia Baptist Church- Nashville, NC. She later moved to Norfolk, Virginia to start her career and met and married the love of her life, Clarence Purnell, Sr. in 1947.

She worked at Norfolk Community Hospital where she later retired. She was a member of the Womens’ Auxillary of Norfolk Community Hospital and was an avid fundraiser. A longtime member of The Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where she served on the Hospitality Committee for many years. She was a foster mother in the City of Norfolk for many years. she fostered in excess of 20 kids, not to mention the many neighborhood kids that called her “Mom.” She was and avid Gospel Quartet follower and super fan of the Dixie Hummingbirds. She loved to travel and traveled throughout the US, including Hawaii.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Winnie, Mary, Leoda, Leslie (Alberta), James (Mittie), Thomas (Bertha) Walter (Ann), Bud (Pearl); and predeceased by her daughter, Annie Battle (James) and grandson, James Battle, Jr. She leaves to cherish her memories her children, Clarence Purnell, Jr., Gardina Purnell Williams (James), Joyce Purnell, Gloria Mitchell and Fadeelah Little; five grandchildren, James Battle (Peggie), Benita Battle Hodges, Little Ada Pitt (Dennis), Candie Davenport (James), Angel Davenport (Ahmad), Trayvon McCoy, Ishah Henson and Emeana McDonald; eight great grandchildren, Charmaine Davenport, Dennis Pitt, Jr., Brittany Hodges, Sheena Pitt, Daryl Battle, Marcel Battle, Jacinda Battle and Amanda Cutchin; three great-great grandchildren; two special friends, Evangaline Patterson and Ethel Mosley; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
